COB and GOB LED Displays for Indoor Installations

COB and GOB LED displays, built with Chip-on-Board and Glue-on-Board technology, are the evolution of professional indoor LED displays. They overcome the limits of traditional SMD in applications where visual uniformity, mechanical protection and operational reliability are non-negotiable.

Unlike SMD, which uses discrete LEDs mounted one by one, COB and GOB integrate the LED chips directly on the substrate under a continuous protective surface. This construction removes the dark gaps between pixels, increases impact resistance and significantly extends operating life in demanding environments.

COB and GOB: two module formats for different applications

Dison COB and GOB LED display technology is built on two module formats, each optimised for specific operating conditions:

320×160 mm module for permanent fixed installations: luxury retail, corporate meeting rooms, 24/7 control rooms, automotive showrooms. Available in COB (pixel pitch P1.25-P1.86) and GOB (pixel pitch P1.25-P2.5). The rectangular format makes standard LED display configurations easy, with a seamless gap below 0.5 mm.

250×250 mm module for rental and temporary events: conferences, theatres, conventions, indoor broadcast. Available in GOB only (pixel pitch P1.95-P2.9) with a fast-lock system for quick assembly and disassembly. The square format allows flexible 16:9, 4:3 or custom configurations to suit each event.

COB vs GOB: specialisation vs versatility

COB (Chip-on-Board) excels in premium fixed installations that need maximum visual uniformity at close range. With a fine pixel pitch of P1.25-P1.86 and the 320×160 mm format, COB is the best choice for luxury retail under 2 metres, automotive showrooms and control rooms where the perception of a continuous, seamless surface is critical.

GOB (Glue-on-Board) offers complete versatility, covering both fixed installations (320×160 mm, P1.25-P2.5) and rental events (250×250 mm, P1.95-P2.9). The epoxy coating of GOB adds better scratch protection than COB, which makes it ideal for high-traffic environments and for rental use with frequent transport. COB costs about 25-30% more than the equivalent GOB.

COB and GOB common technical specifications

COB and GOB both provide IP54 front protection (dust and splash water), an LED lifetime of 100,000 hours (about 11 years of 24/7 operation), contrast of 10,000:1 for COB and 8,000:1 for GOB, and a 160° horizontal and vertical viewing angle. A 3840 Hz refresh rate eliminates flicker on camera, while 13-14 bit gray scale gives ultra-smooth colour gradations for HDR content.

A dead pixel rate of 1% and an MTBF above 10,000 hours show industrial-grade reliability. CE and RoHS certifications ensure compliance in Europe. 2-year standard warranty, with an optional extension to 5 years.

COB and GOB for rental: why GOB only for the 250×250 mm format

Choosing GOB as the only option for the rental format rests on measurable operating requirements. Rental companies run 20-50 assembly and disassembly cycles per installation each year, a mechanical stress that the GOB epoxy coating handles very well, extending operating life by 30-40% compared with traditional SMD.

The P1.95-P2.9 pixel pitch range covers event distances of 2-6 metres, where the audience watches from the stalls, a conference room or an expo area. Pixel pitches below P2 would be overkill at these distances, with a price premium that the visible benefit does not justify.

The fast-lock system and the square format let a rental crew build custom configurations in a few hours: a 6×3 metre setup (24×12 modules, 288 modules in total) takes 2 technicians 3-4 hours for complete assembly, including cabling and calibration. Dismantling after the event takes under 2 hours for the same team.

COB vs GOB: which one to choose

The choice between COB and GOB LED displays depends on objective, measurable parameters: target viewing distance, operating environment, how often maintenance is needed and the available budget. This section gives concrete decision criteria based on real applications and technical trade-offs verified over 18 months of operation on more than 200 Dison installations.

Choose COB when

Maximum visual uniformity is the priority

COB excels when the end user views the screen from less than 1.5-2 metres. The integrated Flip-Chip surface removes any perception of discrete LEDs, giving a seamless image even at 50 centimetres. Luxury retail where customers walk up to the window, automotive showrooms with products 1 metre from the screen and executive meeting rooms with close viewing all need this uniformity.

The 10,000:1 contrast of COB against 8,000:1 for GOB means deeper blacks and better shadow detail. In operational 24/7 control rooms, where operators watch critical data for hours, this difference reduces visual fatigue by 15-20% as measured in comparative user tests.

A stable, climate-controlled environment

Permanent indoor installations in HVAC-controlled environments (temperature 18-24°C, humidity 40-60%) let COB deliver its best performance. The excellent heat dissipation of COB keeps LED temperature 5-8°C lower than GOB under sustained load, extending effective lifetime and reducing colour shift over time.

Corporate headquarters, museums and retail flagship stores offer these stable environments, where the thermal advantage of COB translates into superior reliability over 5-7 years of operation.

A premium budget is available

The COB price premium is justified when the end client values a premium visual experience. Luxury retail projects, tier-1 automotive showrooms and executive boardrooms, where the display is a technological statement as much as a working tool, absorb this investment. For the overlapping pixel pitches P1.25-P1.86, COB costs about 25-30% more than the equivalent GOB, a difference that buys documented visual uniformity and superior thermal performance.

A fine pixel pitch is required (P1.25-P1.86)

For applications that need a pixel pitch of P1.25-P1.86 where uniformity is the priority, COB is the best technical choice. These pixel pitches serve distances of 1.2-2 metres typical of premium applications, where the seamless perception of COB gives a measurable competitive advantage.

Choose GOB when

You need a versatile pixel pitch range

GOB covers the full range P1.25-P2.5 (320×160 mm format) and P1.95-P2.9 (250×250 mm format), offering 8 pixel pitch options against 3 for COB. Projects where the viewing distance varies between 1.2 and 3 metres, or where the budget calls for cost and performance optimisation, benefit from this flexibility.

P2.0 and P2.5, available only in GOB, serve medium to large installations (corporate lobbies, large retail surfaces) where a pitch below P2 would be overkill. A large-format P2.5 GOB video wall costs significantly less than the equivalent P1.86, an important difference when a viewing distance of 2.5-3 metres makes P2.5 perfectly adequate.

Superior mechanical protection is required

The GOB epoxy coating resists scratches and impact 40-50% better than the COB surface. High-traffic environments (interactive museums, retail where customers handle products, automotive showrooms with frequent set-ups) benefit from this extra robustness.

Comparative tests show that the GOB surface survives a 1.2 metre drop test without damage against 0.8 metres for COB. Where accidental impact is a risk, GOB is the safer choice, with an estimated 20-30% reduction in maintenance costs over a 5-year cycle.

Rental applications with frequent cycles

The 250×250 mm GOB rental format handles 20-50 assembly and disassembly cycles per year while keeping its performance. Rental companies serving corporate events, theatres and conventions need this mechanical reliability. The fast-lock system lets a crew of 2 assemble 288 modules (an 18 m² display) in 3-4 hours, against 6-8 hours for traditional formats.

The investment in GOB rental modules is paid back over multiple cycles, with reduced downtime and contained maintenance compared with less robust technologies.

An optimised budget is the priority

For the overlapping pixel pitches P1.25-P1.86, GOB offers 92-95% of the visual quality of COB for a lower investment. Standard corporate projects, non-luxury retail and education installations, where budget is a constraint but professional quality is required, find the best compromise in GOB.

The difference in investment between GOB and COB can be put into a better video processor, an integrated audio system or other AV components, optimising the overall value of the installation.

COB and GOB decision matrix for the overlapping pixel pitches (P1.25-P1.86)

For the three pixel pitches available in both technologies, the choice depends on specific priorities:

COB and GOB quick reference decision table

Primary requirement Viewing distance Environment Budget Best choice
Maximum uniformity <1.5 m Climate-controlled Premium COB
24/7 thermal reliability 1.5-2 m Stable indoor Premium COB
Premium statement quality 1.2-2 m Protected High COB
Mechanical protection <2 m High traffic Medium-high GOB
Pixel pitch versatility 1.5-2 m Standard indoor Optimised GOB

Budget constraint 1.5-2 m Protected Contained GOB

COB and GOB real application scenarios

Luxury retail boutique (viewing distance 1-1.5 m): COB P1.53. Seamless uniformity is essential, customers look from close up, a premium budget is available and the environment is climate-controlled. The premium price is justified by a documented superior visual experience.

Standard corporate meeting room (viewing distance 2-2.5 m): GOB P1.86 or P2.0. The distance suits both pixel pitches, the budget is optimised and there is versatility for future reconfiguration. GOB P2.0 offers a tangible saving over P1.86 with equivalent visual quality at that distance.

Mission-critical 24/7 control room (viewing distance 1.5-2 m): COB P1.86. Continuous operation calls for the optimal heat dissipation of COB, reducing visual fatigue is a priority, and the budget is justified by operational criticality. The longer COB lifetime pays back the higher initial investment.

High-traffic automotive showroom (viewing distance 1-2 m): GOB P1.53. Frequent vehicle set-up and handling call for superior mechanical protection, visual quality is still premium and the GOB coating reduces maintenance. The best compromise between robustness and quality.

Corporate rental events (viewing distance 2-4 m): GOB 250×250 mm P2.6. The fast-lock rental format is essential, the event distance is covered perfectly and GOB robustness handles frequent cycles. It is the only technology available in the rental format.

When NOT to choose COB or GOB

Do not choose COB if

The budget is limited and the distance is over 2 metres: beyond 2 metres the uniformity advantage of COB becomes imperceptible. The premium investment is not justified when GOB P2.0-P2.5 offers equivalent perceived quality with a tangible saving.

The environment carries a high risk of impact: public installations with possible direct contact (interactive museums, hands-on retail, busy showrooms) expose the COB surface to scratches. GOB protection is the more rational choice in these contexts.

You need a pixel pitch above P2: COB is not available beyond P1.86. For viewing distances above 2 metres that call for P2.0, P2.5 or P2.9, GOB is the only option (or traditional SMD for very tight budgets).

It is a rental event application: COB is not available in the 250×250 mm rental format. Temporary events need a fast-lock system and handling robustness that only GOB 250×250 mm offers in the Dison portfolio.

Do not choose GOB if

Absolute priority is uniformity under 1 metre: for luxury applications where the user looks from under 1 metre and budget is no constraint, the superior contrast and uniformity of COB justify the premium. GOB offers 95% of COB quality, but that remaining 5% can be noticeable in ultra-premium contexts.

You need 24/7 operation under sustained load: mission-critical control rooms with displays running 20-24 hours a day benefit from the superior heat dissipation of COB. An LED temperature 5-8°C lower means long-term reliability and less colour shift.

Professional maintenance is guaranteed: if specialist technical support is available and the environment is protected, the mechanical protection advantage of GOB matters less. In these optimised contexts COB delivers its best performance.

When traditional SMD is the better alternative

A very tight budget with a distance over 3 metres: for large-format installations where the viewing distance exceeds 3-4 metres, traditional SMD offers adequate visual quality for a lower investment than COB or GOB. SMD P2.5-P3 LED displays serve lobbies, large retail surfaces and events with an optimised budget.

Single-LED repairability is required: SMD allows individual discrete LEDs to be replaced with standard soldering equipment. COB and GOB need the whole module replaced for a dead pixel. If autonomous maintenance is a priority, SMD keeps the operating advantage.

See the Dison SMD LED display range for budget-conscious alternatives: 320×160 mm and 640×480 mm formats are available in pixel pitches P1.86-P3.07 with SMD technology, at a lower investment than the equivalent GOB.

COB and GOB LED display configurations: from module to complete unit

The 320×160 mm LED modules are assembled into pre-configured LED displays for permanent fixed installations, while the 250×250 mm modules allow free custom configurations for rental applications. Setup: ground support structure, 2 technicians, 4 hours of assembly. Dismantling: 2 hours after the event. Benefits of this configuration: native 16:9 aspect ratio for corporate video, a resolution adequate for readable text at 4-5 m, a weight that a crew of 2 can handle, and a fast-lock system that cuts setup time by 40% compared with traditional systems.

Theatres: classic 4:3 setup

Application: theatre or convention hall, audience distance 4-8 metres. Configuration: 6×4.5 m 4:3 display. Technology: GOB 250×250 mm P2.9. Composition: 24 columns × 18 rows = 432 modules. Resolution: 2064×1548 pixels. Total weight: about 680 kg (modules + truss rigging).

Power consumption: maximum 1,350 W; average 405 W.

Setup: suspended truss rigging, 2 technicians plus a rigger, 5-6 hours of total assembly. Dismantling: 3 hours. Benefits of this configuration: P2.9 pixel pitch is ideal for theatre distances of 6-8 m, the traditional 4:3 format is compatible with legacy content, suspended rigging frees up stage space, and GOB protection withstands audio and bass vibration.

Calculating the power consumption of COB and GOB configurations

Power consumption formula

Theoretical maximum consumption: display area (m²) × max consumption for the pixel pitch (W/m²) = maximum watts.

Real operating consumption: display area (m²) × average consumption for the pixel pitch (W/m²) = average watts.

Practical example, 10 m² video wall in P1.86:

  • Max consumption: 10 m² × 260 W/m² = 2,600 W theoretical maximum
  • Average consumption: 10 m² × 75 W/m² = 750 W real operation (mixed content, APL 30%)
  • Monthly consumption: 750 W × 8 h/day × 22 days = 132 kWh/month

Factors that affect real consumption:

  • APL (Average Picture Level): darker content consumes less
  • Brightness setting: 80% brightness reduces consumption by about 15-20%
  • Content type: dynamic video uses 20% more than static images
  • Ambient temperature: above 28°C, cooling consumption increases

COB and GOB LED displays: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between COB and GOB LED displays?

COB (Chip-on-Board) mounts the LED chips directly on the substrate under a continuous surface, which gives maximum visual uniformity at close range. GOB (Glue-on-Board) adds a protective epoxy coating on top, which improves scratch and impact resistance. Both are indoor technologies and both offer IP54 front protection.

Which is better for close viewing, COB or GOB?

COB is the better choice when people view the screen from under 1.5-2 metres, for example in luxury retail, automotive showrooms and executive meeting rooms. Its black surface gives a contrast of 10,000:1 against 8,000:1 for GOB, with slightly better colour uniformity. GOB remains a good option from about 2 metres.

Which pixel pitches are available in COB and GOB?

In the 320×160 mm format, COB is available in P1.25, P1.53 and P1.86, and GOB in P1.25, P1.53, P1.86, P2.0 and P2.5. In the 250×250 mm rental format, GOB is available in P1.95, P2.6 and P2.9. P2.0 and P2.5 are GOB only.

Which module format should I choose?

Choose the 320×160 mm module for permanent installations such as retail, corporate spaces and control rooms, where you want a standard configuration and a seamless gap below 0.5 mm. Choose the 250×250 mm GOB module for rental and events, where you need a fast-lock system, free custom configurations and frequent assembly cycles.

Is GOB more resistant than COB?

Yes. The epoxy coating of GOB protects the surface better against scratches and impact, which is why it is the choice for high-traffic areas, public access and rental use with frequent transport. COB offers better heat dissipation and contrast, so it suits stable, climate-controlled indoor environments.

Can COB and GOB displays be used for rental events?

Rental is covered by the 250×250 mm GOB module. It has a fast-lock system with magnets and a front service access, and it is designed for repeated assembly and disassembly. The 320×160 mm module is designed for permanent installations.

What is the viewing distance for each pixel pitch?

As a guide, P1.25 works from 1.2 m, P1.53 from 1.5 m, P1.86 from 1.8 m, P2.0 from 2.0 m and P2.5 from 2.5 m. In the rental format, P1.95 works from 2.0 m, P2.6 from 2.6 m and P2.9 from 3.0 m.

Are COB and GOB compatible with NovaStar video processors?

Yes. Dison COB and GOB displays work with NovaStar video processors, including the Pro versions (VX400 Pro, VX600 Pro, VX1000 Pro and VX2000 Pro). Choose the processor according to the total resolution of the display. Colour calibration works in the same way on both technologies.

What certifications and warranty come with Dison COB and GOB displays?

Dison COB and GOB displays are CE and RoHS certified. The standard warranty is 2 years on modules and LED components, with an optional extension to 5 years.

How do I choose between COB and GOB for my project?

Start from four things: viewing distance, environment, how often the display is handled or moved, and budget. Choose COB for close viewing and stable premium installations, and GOB for a wider pixel pitch range, public areas and rental. If you are unsure, contact the Dison team through the contact page.
